Celebratory day as the Libary Garden takes part in Royal Newark in Bloom

Today was a brilliant day for our Library Garden as part of Royal Newark in Bloom.

The Friends of the Library Garden group had a great morning meeting the judges and sharing the story of how the community saved the green space. The garden looked as beautiful as ever in the sunshine and when the judges arrived, our beloved green space was being used by Newark residents of all ages.

We saved some iconic posters and pieces of artwork that were placed on the trees and barricades last autumn to help protect them and used them for our Newark in Bloom presentation. It felt right to display them so that the Newark in Bloom judges could see the passion behind our #StoptheChop campaign to save the garden and also how deeply loved this green space is by residents.

Well done to the Friends of the Library Garden and all of Protect Newark’s Green Spaces and supporters. This incredible opportunity to be involved in helping Newark win gold for Newark in Bloom could not have been imagined just over one year ago! The first ‘Stop the Chop’ rally was held, with socially distanced and limited numbers, on 26 June 2021.

One of our Fab Five, Pamela Ball, who stayed overnight guarding the trees last November and then went on to start the Friends group, has praised the dedicated group of volunteers, saying: 'What a fantastic team we have. This is such a unique urban wild space and we hope that our planting of native wild plants here will continue and help in increasing its biodiversity.’
